Fasting has long been promoted as an effective way to eliminate toxins and clean your body. It’s been said that it could even cure diseases. Should you try it? First I want to mention that you should never fast if you’re hypoglycemic. Fasting for those who are hypoglycemic is dangerous and will generally result in a trip to the ER. As Hashimoto’s is said to be a result of both genetic and environmental factors, eliminating toxins within your body would be highly beneficial. No matter what form of thyroid disease you suffer from, a fast can help detoxify your body and make you feel renewed.

If you’ve never fasted before, it’s a good idea to begin with a juice fast. A juice fast is a fast where you don’t consume any foods but drink plenty of fruit and vegetable juices. That way the detoxification process will be gentler, you’ll still get the nutrients you need and won’t experience that many side effects. A 3-day juice fast is recommended for beginners. You may experience dizziness and weakness during fasting, that’s normal, but usually people report feeling light and energetic. Some people claim to have more energy while fasting than when they’re not.

Water fast is when you don’t consume any solid foods, just water or lemon water. If you’re a beginner, a water fast may produce too many side effects as detoxification takes place. Old cells, bacteria, viruses and parasites are eliminated during fasting. Some people add maple syrup to the lemon water, as well as cayenne pepper. When fasting, after the 5th day the immune system starts repairing itself. This is great news for people with auto-immune disease as a better functioning immune system would potentially ease your symptoms.

Some people go as long as 40 days without food. But don’t think that if you fasted once that’s enough. In order to achieve long-term results you need to do at least five fasting cycles over several months. Prepare for a fast by eating light foods, and lots of fruits and vegetables few days in advance. And always listen to your body.

Here are some juicing recipes to get you started:

Immune Booster

3 carrots,

1 stalk of celery,

half of a beet,

1 apple,

half a handful each of wheatgrass and parsley.

If wheatgrass is not available, use a whole handful of parsley

Lemony apple

2 apples,

1 lemon,

1” slice of ginger

This is also a healthy remedy for colds as it is rich in flavonoid content. It also has a fresh and tangy taste that is quite invigorating.

Alkaline juice

1 cup of spinach / kale / silverbeet

½ cup of cucumber,

2 stalks of celery including the leaves

3 carrots

½ an apple

The skin of the dark green cucumber will provide the source of chlorophyll which is a phytochemical that can help to build up the red blood cells.

The cucumbers also contain silica which is a mineral that is good for the skin.
