Did you know…?

Ballina and Killaloe used to have its very own railway station. The Killaloe railway station was operated by The Great Southern & Western Railway from 1864 and the station house you see with the Hotel in the background was when it was rebuilt in 1894 (the same year that the hotel was built as it happens!). It was possible to travel directly from Knightsbridge Station (Now Heuston Station in Dublin) to Killaloe by train via Birdhill. You could also opt for a combined ticket to travel onto Bannagher on the Shannon by Steamer from Killaloe station. This service ceased in 1931 and station building was turned into a private residence remaining sympathetic to its roots. You will see the old railway signals and plaques outside and it is possible to trace the old line through fabulous Ballina recreational park below the bridge!”
