For many, the sweets & savouries are integral to the mood of Diwali. For us south Indian's, nothing evokes Diwali more than the traditional Inji Marundhu – or the fresh ginger medicine. A small ball of this after an oil bath in the wee hours of the morning is how we start the festivities. It is an ayurvedic preparation of ginger and some spices with jaggery that serves to aid digestion and acts as a tonic to balance the seasonal over indulgence. And this is what it looks like.
