Did you know…?
In 1920 during the troubles in Ireland 3 members of the IRA, who had been on the run after burning down the Scarriff RIC barracks in September of that year, were captured and, along with a local caretaker, were shot at this spot by the Crown Forces; The Auxiliaries on November 17th.
When you cross the Shannon over our famous 13 arch bridge you will see this stone plaque halfway across. This commemorates this very significant event in the town’s history.
In retaliation for this, The IRA burned down The Lakeside Hotel (which was being used by the Auxiliaries at this time as a base). The hotel was rebuilt a year later to the current structure that resides today.
